Valerian is a perennial plant native to Europe and Asia, and naturalized in North America. Valerian grows wild, but most valerian used for medicinal purposes is cultivated. It has been used as a medicinal herb at least since the time of ancient Green and Rome. Over many centuries, it has been used for a host of conditions, including sleep disorders, anxiety, restlessness, nervous tension, stress, nausea, gastrointestinal cramps and liver problems. By the 18th century, valerian was an accepted sedative used for insomnia and calming the nervous system under anxious or stressful conditions. Please visit CNCA’s Valerian Sleep Ade product page for more information about this herb.
Why Take a Valerian Sleep Ade?
Generally, valerian makes sleep more restful, as well as making the transition to sleep easier. It does not tend to increase the total time slept according to double-blind clinical trials that found valerian an effective treatment for people with mild to moderately severe insomnia. In the first of these trials, 400mg doses of valerian produced a significant improvement in sleep quality. In the second trial, the results concluded 450mg doses of valerian produced improved sleep quality; 900mg doses did not produce any further improvement; sleep latency was reduced, as were nighttime awakenings.
Valerian appears to be as effective in reducing sleep latency as small doses of barbiturates or benzodiazepines, but in contrast, reduces the morning sleepiness seen with those drugs.
How Much Valerian Should I Take?
Valeriana officinalis has been classified by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA or FDA) as “GRAS” (generally recognized as safe) for food use. However, it is important to remember that medicinal amounts of any vitamin, mineral, herbal or specialty nutrient should only be taken with the advice of a licensed healthcare professional.
Based on clinical research results, the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements recommends the following:
- Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take valerian without medical advice because the possible risks to the fetus or infant have not been evaluated.
- Children under the age of 3 years old should not take valerian because the possible risks to children of this age have not been evaluated.
- Individuals taking valerian should be aware of the theoretical possibility of additive sedative effects from alcohol or sedative drugs, such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines.
Before you add Valerian Sleep-Ade to your daily regimen, please consult your physician. He or she can help you determine whether it will interact with any medications you currently may be taking.
