MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a water-soluble, organic form of the mineral sulfur, found naturally in a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains and in animals, including humans (the highest concentrations found in mother's milk) in at least trace amounts. MSM is also found in plants, such as Equisetem arvense, or horsetail. First discovered in 1939, MSM was extensively studied and finally introduced in 1989 to promote joint mobility. MSM has also been clinically shown to promote a healthy immune response to common allergens. Most recently, research suggests MSM may help maintain healthy homocysteine levels, a marker of heart health.
The main function of MSM in the body is as an anti-inflammatory agent and pain reliever. It is used to help in the treatment of scleroderma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also promotes healthy skin and nails. Please visit CNCA’s MSM product page for more information about this herb.
Why Take MSM?
Claims for MSM include pain relief, particularly in arthritis, immune modulation in autoimmune disorders, muscle repair, sleep aid and diabetes therapy. More research is needed to better support these claims. There is very preliminary research suggesting some possible MSM anti-cancer effects.
Two animal studies showed that MSM and other bipolar solvents can prolong latency period to time of tumor appearance in chemically induced animal model cancers. In one of these studies, there was no effect on tumor incidence; In the other, MSM seemed to reduce the incidence of poorly differentiated tumors.8 More research is warranted.
Osteoarthritis
MSM may be beneficial in reducing pain and inflammation in arthritis. It has been reported that joints affected by osteoarthritis have a sulfur concentration about one-third the level of normal cartilage. Arthritic mice that were given MSM experienced less joint deterioration.10 MSM appears to exhibit many properties (which may be attributable to its sulfur content) that may be beneficial to osteoarthritis patients. These include anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, decreased formation of scar tissue and improved blood flow.
Pain Relief
Pain relief may be one of the most important applications for MSM. One study showed a 60% reduction in pain after four weeks of MSM supplementation and an 82% reduction in pain after six weeks.
Repetitive Stress Injuries and Inflammation
Clinical observation and anecdotal evidence suggests that MSM supplementation may be beneficial in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis and tennis elbow.
Allergies and Other Respiratory Conditions
Hundreds of case studies have reported good success with MSM supplementation and respiratory conditions. Researchers suggest that 2600mg per day for 30 days is effective at reducing symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Scleroderma
Scleroderma is a multi-system disease characterized by diffuse fibrosis, degenerative changes and vascular abnormalities in the skin. DMSO and MSM have been found to be effective in the treatment of scleroderma. Intravenous MSM may be the most effective and most tolerated therapy for scleroderma.
Systemic Lupus Erythermatosus
MSM has been shown to nearly double the lifespan of animals prone to developing autoimmune diseases such as lupus.
Fibromyalgia
MSM may offer gradual pain relief in fibromyalgia patients.
How Much MSM Should I Take?
Extremely safe, even at high dosages, it is strongly recommended to slowly increase MSM dosage in accordance with the labeled directions. Some authorities report anecdotally that 250 - 500mg per day has beneficial effects on a variety of health problems.3 The 2007 edition of the Physician's Desk Reference (Online version) says typical doses range from 1g - 3g per day.4 The only controlled trial using MSM used over 2,000mg per day to treat osteoarthritis, More research is needed before definite recommendations for MSM supplementation can be made
