The milk thistle plant (silybum marianum) is a member of the aster or daisy family and grows anywhere between 70 to 150 cm tall. The purple flowers of the milk thistle plant are large, while its fruit is brown and spotted with a white tuft of hair. The ripe seeds of the milk thistle fruit are the medicinal part. Milk thistle is also known by the names marian thistle, Mediterranean milk thistle, and Mary thistle.
