The Business of Dietary Supplements

In 2005, the natural, herbal, and nutritional dietary supplement industry saw $20 billion in sales in the United States. Responding to a Harris Interactive/Dietary Supplement Education Alliance poll, approximately 59 percent of Americans said they take dietary supplements on a regular basis. A 2005 study reported 85% of the U.S. population is using some type of dietary supplement. That same study revealed that 70% of the population believes regular use of nutritional supplements can keep people healthier and reduce healthcare costs. (National Marketing Institute/DSEA.)

A Short History of Dietary Supplements

In 1994 lawmakers passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. According to the DSHEA, dietary supplements contain an ingredient used to supplement the diet and can be taken orally. Dietary supplements may be sold as tablets, enzymes, capsules, soft gels, gel caps, liquids, or powders.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates dietary supplements under a different set of rules than conventional foods and drugs. Under the DSHEA, manufacturers of dietary supplements are responsible for ensuring that dietary supplements are safe before being marketed. The FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplements after they reach the market.

Manufacturers do not normally need to register with the FDA before producing or selling dietary supplements. That said, manufacturers must make sure that product label information on their dietary supplements is truthful and not misleading.

In conjunction with the DSHEA, Congress established the Office of Dietary Supplements in 1995. As well as a resource for information on dietary supplements, the ODS explores the role of dietary supplements in the improvement of healthcare.

Many health care practitioners recommend taking a high quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement as a foundation for nutritional supplementation programs. As with any supplement, though, please consult your physician before you add a supplement to your diet.
